AREAS BELOW LIFTING OPERATIONS
A lifting operation is just the same as its name suggests. It allows you to elevate workers or items at the required height. Lifting operations are a necessity in the construction industry. Lifting operations can be performed both manually and with automated mechanical tools.
Since height is involved in lifting equipment, fall or drops hazards are commonly associated with them. They put workers at great risk of injury.
Lifting Equipment
Any equipment used to lift a certain load is considered a lifting equipment. It includes accessories and attachments for anchoring or fixing the equipment. Some of the other examples of lifting equipment are given in detail below.
A hoist is a lifting equipment that uses a drum or lift-wheel and rope system to lift accessories or people. It can be manually or electrically driven depending on the usage.
A Crane is the most integral part of a construction site across different industries. It is a type of machine generally used to lift heavy loads and move them horizontally. Some of the examples of cranes are; A tower crane is a balance crane fixed on the ground. It provides high lifting capacity at high altitudes. A telescopic crane is a truck-mounted crane that has booms put one inside another. They are also called mobile cranes and are commonly used for temporary projects.
A forklift truck is an industrial truck for moving materials from one place to another. Elevated work platforms are used to access areas at a certain height. A passenger lift or a construction elevator is used to transport workers.
Hazard Zone During a Lifting Operation
A Hazard zone is a restricted area any person is not allowed to enter during work operations. One of the many causes of accidents during a lifting operation are attributed to workers entering the hazard zone. Although accidents does not always happen in the hazard sone, it is absolutely necessary to recognize hazard zones and keep yourself away from it.
The area that could be labeled as a Hazard zone during a lifting operation can be directly under the load or around its surroundings. Sometimes the lifting equipment can break during the fall and may not only hurt the people below it but also the people in the neighboring areas.
While the Hazard zone is recognizable by the workers, it may be possible that observers or bystanders may enter the area accidentally without being aware of the danger. For such cases, there should be a danger sign indicating the hazard zone to keep the accidents to the bare minimum.
